If you've ever lost weight only to watch it creep back, you already know the hardest part isn't starting, it's making the change last. As a pharmacist and the founder of Windwood Health Clinic, I've spoken with many people in Shepherd's Bush who've tried every diet going and come away feeling like they've failed. They haven't. More often, the plan simply wasn't built around them.
That's the difference a medically supervised approach makes, and it's why we set our weight management service up the way we did.
Why "just eat less and move more" often isn't enough
Weight is shaped by far more than discipline. Your medical history, hormones, sleep, stress, medications and metabolism all play a part. When a plan ignores those, it tends to fail, and the cycle of losing and regaining can chip away at your confidence and your health.
A medically supervised programme starts from the opposite end, by understanding the full picture before suggesting anything. At Windwood, that means a proper conversation, not a quick weigh-in.
Where running fits in
Many of the people I see want to get more active, and running is one of the most accessible ways to do it. It's free, you can start from your front door, and a social running group can make it far easier to keep going. But running works best as part of a plan rather than as a punishment for what you've eaten. Starting gently, building up gradually and fuelling properly matters, because under-eating while increasing your training can leave you tired, injury-prone and more likely to give up. If you're new to running or returning after a long break, it's worth talking through any health conditions or medications with a professional first, so your plan supports your activity rather than working against it.
What a weight management consultation involves
Every plan at the clinic begins with a thorough, unhurried assessment. Depending on what's right for you, that may include:
- a review of your health history, lifestyle, goals and any previous attempts
- relevant health checks and blood tests, arranged as needed
- evidence-based support covering nutrition, physical activity and behaviour change
- a personalised plan with regular review, so it adapts as you progress
There are no off-the-shelf promises here. Any approach is decided together with our clinical team, based on what is safe and suitable for you, and we're honest that results vary from person to person.
Why supervision matters
The value of medical supervision isn't only the plan, it's the monitoring. Checking for underlying causes, keeping an eye on your progress and your wellbeing, and adjusting as you go is what turns a short-term result into a sustainable one. It also means someone is looking out for your safety the whole way through.
